Meghalaya Government Decries KHADC’s Border Visit as ‘Misstep’ Amid Assam Tensions
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong declared that the recent inspection by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) of a disputed area near the Meghalaya-Assam border was a mistake. This comment comes in the wake of a clash that occurred on July 30 in the Garbhanga Forest area, where villagers from Meghalaya allegedly attacked Assam Forest officials, leading to injuries among several officials.
The violence erupted when the villagers convened a meeting in a contentious region, a gathering that Assam Forest officials interrupted. Tynsong emphasized that the KHADC should have informed the state government before proceeding with the inspection, stating, “I personally feel that was a mistake done by the KHADC. I feel the KHADC should not go for inspection.”
He further explained that the area in question remains disputed even within the KHADC, as two chiefdoms, Jiram and Lyngdoh, are laying claim to it. Tynsong suggested that the meeting aimed at addressing the claims of these two chiefdoms should have taken place at the KHADC office instead of the disputed location.
