A 43-year-old woman in Mumbai has been charged with the murder of her six-month-old son, whom she allegedly smothered with a pillow due to financial difficulties exacerbated by both of them testing positive for HIV. The tragic incident, which unfolded on the evening of August 1, was revealed after the woman became involved in a violent altercation at her workplace, a garment unit in Govandi. In the course of this scuffle, she reportedly threatened a colleague with a knife. When police arrived, the woman confessed to killing her child, stating that she felt incapable of raising him given her dire financial situation.
When officers visited her home, they discovered the infant lifeless in his cradle. Efforts to revive the child at a nearby hospital were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead on arrival. The woman has since been booked for murder.
In a separate incident in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district, two tribal men were kidnapped and violently beaten for eloping with their partners. On August 1, police reported that a group reacted to the couples’ relationship with brutal force, tying the men to a tree and assaulting them. Additionally, the women faced aggression from their own relatives. A video of the attack circulated on social media, prompting police action that led to the arrest of ten individuals connected to the incident. The victims reported being kidnapped and transported to a location where they were tied up and assaulted, primarily due to their families’ outrage over the elopement.
Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly district, a man was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife at the request of his lover, trying to disguise the act as a robbery. Om Saran, aged 38, initially reported that he and his wife, Amarvati, were attacked by unidentified assailants on July 31 while returning home on a motorcycle. He claimed the attackers stole cash and jewelry before fatally harming his wife. However, inconsistencies in his statements led police to investigate further, uncovering his communication with his lover, Mannat. Under interrogation, Saran confessed that Mannat pressured him to kill Amarvati to sustain their relationship. Both Saran and his accomplice are now in police custody.
