MNF Alleges Mizoram CM’s Secretive Move to Relocate Capital to Thenzawl
The Mizo National Front (MNF), the primary opposition party in Mizoram, has accused Chief Minister Lalduhoma of secretly planning to relocate the state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl in the Serchhip district, which is his constituency, without consulting the public. During a gathering with party workers in Aizawl, MNF general secretary Zodinpuia alleged that Lalduhoma had submitted a petition to the central government requesting financial aid for the capital relocation project while keeping the people of Mizoram uninformed.
Zodinpuia referenced a letter dated April 24 from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which was sent to the Mizoram chief secretary and the resident commissioner in Delhi. The letter discussed the “shifting of state capital from Aizawl to Thenzawl” and requested a Detailed Project Report (DPR), based on documents accessed by the MNF.
The general secretary further claimed that while Lalduhoma publicly spoke of developing Thenzawl into a “peace city” to alleviate congestion in Aizawl, he hid the more extensive plan to designate it as the new capital. Zodinpuia characterized this as a betrayal of public trust, noting that residents of Aizawl and the broader Mizoram population were not consulted in the decision-making process. He called for the chief minister to be transparent about his intentions.
Thenzawl, located approximately 93 kilometers from Aizawl, is renowned for its handloom industry and tourism, featuring the state’s only golf course and the picturesque Vantawng waterfalls. Lalduhoma has previously suggested that the area could be developed to support around one million residents, with anticipated backing from the central government.
In April, the chief minister disclosed that ₹10 crore had already been allocated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to prepare a master plan for the proposed relocation. He asserted that he had discussed the endeavor with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the 16th Finance Commission.
As of now, the Chief Minister’s Office has not issued any statement in response to the allegations raised by the MNF.
