East Khasi Hills Bans Roadside Picnics to Combat Tourist Litter Crisis

Authorities in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya have enacted a strict ban on roadside picnics and littering to combat the increasing issue of plastic waste and discarded beer bottles left by tourists. Announced on Friday, this decision follows numerous complaints and clear evidence showing that beautiful viewpoints and nearby areas have become dumping grounds.

A district official commented, “From beer cans to plastic wrappers, the mess is visible in every corner. It’s not only an eyesore but also harms the environment and our tourism reputation.” The new regulations prohibit cooking or hosting picnics on the roadside, with police assigned to monitor popular areas and take action against those who violate these rules.

This initiative was prompted by similar concerns expressed by the Deputy Chief of Hima Sohra last week, which led local authorities to require dustbins in all vehicles entering the Sohra tourism area. Tourists are now encouraged to appreciate the natural beauty of Meghalaya responsibly, ensuring it does not become a littered landscape.
