A decades-old Shiva temple in Chandrapur, located along Kanthal Road in Assam’s Cachar district, has been restored, thanks to a remarkable display of unity-largely facilitated by contributions from local Muslim residents. The temple, believed to be around 70 to 80 years old, had fallen into disrepair over the years. Originally built with funds raised by villagers who collected and sold rice, it had not seen renovations since its establishment. However, a young local resident recently sparked the initiative to revive this important structure.
The project faced its first hurdle: a lack of funds. The area struggles economically, and most families subsist on modest incomes. Nevertheless, residents of various faiths joined forces to support the renovation efforts. Muslim families stepped in to provide both financial assistance and manual labor. What began as a simple initiative transformed into a broader, collaborative community project. Locals emphasized that the help offered was not merely symbolic; it was vital and ongoing.
Bidhan Laskar, a member of the temple committee, expressed the significance of the effort, stating, “Every religion has its own form of devotion. But good deeds, selfless service, and love for one another go beyond caste and creed.”
The newly renovated temple now stands as a powerful testament to what a community can achieve together. While it remains deeply rooted in Hindu faith, it has also become a symbol of shared ownership and mutual respect among diverse groups. Laskar hopes this example serves as a broader lesson: “If we choose to rise above religious divisions, we can build not just temples, but stronger, united communities.”
