Security Forces Neutralize 3 Terrorists Linked to Pahalgam Attack
“Those who are gone won’t return, but terror must end. We are proud of the Indian Army,” remarked one family member of a victim, reflecting the sentiments of many after the Indian Army’s successful operation in eliminating three terrorists, including the alleged mastermind behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack. Conducted on July 28, the mission, termed Operation Mahadev, was launched by the Chinar Corps in Lidwas, Jammu and Kashmir.
The slain terrorists were identified as Hashim Musa, also known as Suleiman, alongside Yasir and Abu Hamza, all connected to the Pakistan-based terror group, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The operation marked a significant achievement for Indian authorities who had been actively searching for these individuals since the horrific attack, which claimed 26 lives.
Security forces in Kashmir had heightened their vigilance following the attack, diligently pursuing leads. A crucial breakthrough occurred 14 days prior to the operation when suspicious communications were detected, indicating the use of a Chinese ultra radio device by the terrorists for encrypted messaging. This device later helped pinpoint their location in the Dachigam forest area, aided by inputs from local nomads.
Once identified, a drone was deployed to gather visual intelligence on the terrorists. This led units from the Rashtriya Rifles and Para Special Forces to Mahadev hill. Utilizing the element of surprise, they encircled the terrorists at around 11:30 AM, swiftly neutralizing them. Reports suggest that the terrorists were caught off guard, as they were napping at the time of the encounter.
During the operation, security personnel recovered significant weaponry, including a U.S.-made carbine, an AK-47, and 17 rifle grenades, indicating that the terrorists were well-prepared and potentially plotting another attack. The presence of food and cooking utensils suggested they had planned to remain at that location for an extended period.
The success of Operation Mahadev drew numerous accolades. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha commended the joint efforts of the Army, police, and Central Reserve Police Force, emphasizing ongoing operations aimed at mitigating terrorist threats. For the families of the Pahalgam attack victims, the elimination of the terrorists has brought a sense of closure. Vikas Kumrawat, who lost his brother in the attack, expressed relief, viewing this as a commendable achievement for both the government and the military.
Rajesh Narwal, father of a deceased Indian Navy officer, also praised the bravery of the security forces, highlighting the risks they took to achieve this operation.
The name “Operation Mahadev” is both symbolic and strategic, tied to the Mahadev peak in the Zabarwan Range, a region rich in spiritual significance in local folklore. It is said to be the path taken by Lord Shiva to the Amarnath Cave, where he imparted the tale of immortality to Goddess Parvati.
