Urgent Concern: Assam Minister on Encroacher Renaming Guwahati Hills
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika announced on July 26 that the state government has intensified efforts to evict illegal occupants from government and forest lands, particularly in the hill areas surrounding Guwahati. This initiative comes amid rising concerns over illegal encroachments statewide.
Hazarika emphasized that while certain sensitive districts in Assam require additional attention, the government remains committed to addressing encroachments in urban regions as well. He highlighted the issue in Guwahati’s Adingiri Hill, where encroachers have not only illegally occupied land but have also renamed it ‘Kudratpur.’
“This is not just about land. This is about intention,” the minister stated. He elaborated that renaming encroached areas reflects an attempt to alter the identity of those places. The government’s ongoing warnings, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, have repeatedly underscored this concern.
According to Hazarika, the renaming of a central hill in Guwahati signifies deeper issues extending beyond land ownership. He remarked that the focus on these matters is also about preserving Assam’s cultural heritage and identity. “We have said time and again; this is not merely a land issue. This involves protecting our culture, our identity, and our roots,” he added.
The minister also expressed his worries about rapid demographic changes in certain state areas. He warned that systematic encroachment, particularly in forest lands near Guwahati, poses significant risks to the state’s cultural heritage and future. Such demographic shifts could lead to more serious issues if not addressed promptly.
Hazarika confirmed that the state government has already issued eviction notices to those unlawfully occupying these lands. He reassured the public that this operation is being conducted lawfully and that all required procedures are being followed. “Our fight will continue. We are dedicated to protecting the land, culture, and future of Assam,” he concluded.
