Shocking Demolition Notices in Shalimar Bagh and Shahdara: AAP Slams BJP’s Heartless Attack on Vulnerable Slum Clusters!
AAP’s Atishi Criticizes Delhi Government Over Slum Demolition Notices
In a significant development regarding housing rights in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has raised alarms over the issuance of demolition notices to slum clusters in Shalimar Bagh and Shahdara. At a press conference held at the AAP headquarters on July 25, 2025, Leader of Opposition Atishi accused the BJP-led Delhi government of failing the city’s vulnerable populations and breaking promises made during the election campaign.
Atishi highlighted that the BJP had previously issued cards to slum dwellers with the assurance of “Jahan jhuggi, wahin makaan,” a commitment that she claims has not been honored. She referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement guaranteeing that no slum would be dismantled without providing alternative housing. “Yet, within just six months, slums have been demolished across the city. Now, in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s own constituency, demolition notices have been served to two slum areas,” she stated.
The AAP leader detailed that residents of Indira Camp in Shalimar Bagh and Lalbagh in Shahdara-both established in 1990-have received notices demanding they vacate their homes within just 15 days. The Lalbagh slums face an impending demolition scheduled for July 31. Atishi emphasized the long-standing presence of these communities, remarking, “No government touched these slums for 35 years. But this BJP government is bulldozing them.”
In a strong assertion about the agency of marginalized communities, she reminded the public, “Don’t underestimate the power of the poor. They run this city, and they can halt it.” AAP leader and former MLA from Shalimar Bagh, Vandana Kumari, further supported Atishi’s claims, stating that notices were delivered on July 23 in the same area where Chief Minister Gupta resides. “This is an anti-poor policy. AAP has never demolished any slum without first providing permanent housing,” Kumari asserted, pledging to resist the demolitions with “full force.”
As the situation unfolds, there has been no immediate response from the BJP or the Delhi government regarding these serious allegations. The AAP’s staunch defense of slum residents highlights ongoing tensions over housing rights, with the potential for significant political ramifications as the demolition of homes looms.
The timing of these events is crucial, occurring in a city already grappling with numerous housing issues, shining a spotlight on the commitments made by political leaders and the consequences of their policies on the lives of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
As debates around affordable housing and urban policy continue to intensify, the AAP’s actions and statements resonate with broader public concerns over social justice and equitable governance in Delhi.
