Nagaland Strengthens Border Security: Urgent Measures Along Assam Line

Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio convened a high-level meeting on July 24 with the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and other senior officials to bolster security measures along the Assam-Nagaland border. This initiative arises in response to concerns about potential illegal infiltration following eviction drives currently happening in Assam. In a social media update, Dr. Rio emphasized the importance of strengthening vigilance mechanisms and stated that the state government is engaging with all stakeholders to thwart any illegal movements.

During the meeting, Dr. Rio announced intensified border patrols along the Assam-Nagaland border and noted that Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton is closely monitoring the situation on the ground. Local district administrators and Superintendents of Police in bordering areas are collaborating to prevent any unauthorized movement. The Chief Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring citizens’ safety and maintaining law and order, reiterating that any unlawful activities will be addressed firmly in line with the law.

Deputy Chief Minister Patton took the initiative to visit the Ralan area in Wokha district to assess the situation and address public concerns about a possible influx of illegal immigrants. He pointed out that actions taken in Assam have generated unease among local residents who fear such movements could disrupt their communities. Patton held a community meeting at Liphanyan village, where he acknowledged the broader implications of the issue that transcend state lines, highlighting it as a national concern.

To enhance local security measures, he announced the deployment of a company from the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in the Ralan area starting Wednesday. Additionally, any eviction activities within the DAB zone will be conducted jointly between the governments of Assam and Nagaland. Patton reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order while upholding the rights and dignity of citizens and assuring that communication with stakeholders will continue to enhance peace and security in the region.

Patton expressed his gratitude to various officials, including MLA Achumbemo Kikon, the District Commissioner of Wokha, and representatives from local organizations, for their cooperation and support during his visit. He later chaired a coordination meeting in Niuland, attended by multiple local leaders and officials. Acknowledging the growing concerns over illegal immigration, Patton praised the community’s unity and vigilance in monitoring the situation.

He recognized the dedicated efforts of local administrations and community volunteers in maintaining a constant watch on border activities and urged NGOs and leaders to remain proactive in identifying and reporting any suspicious settlements in their areas. Patton’s remarks underscored the need for continued vigilance in this porous border area to ensure safety and stability for the residents of Nagaland.
