Arunachal CM Champions Indigenous Traditions and Faiths with Renewed Commitment
The Arunachal Pradesh government is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the state’s indigenous faiths, affirming their importance as the spiritual and cultural essence of tribal communities, according to Chief Minister Pema Khandu. In a social media message on Thursday, Khandu emphasized that these indigenous faiths differ fundamentally from major religions. He noted that they do not stem from scriptures but are deeply rooted in the land, memory, and lived experiences of the people.
“They are not exported; they are rooted. They hold the soul of our people, our forests, mountains, rivers, and ancestors,” Khandu stated on X. He reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding this ancestral wisdom through various initiatives currently underway across the state.
Khandu detailed that six indigenous gurukuls have been established for the Adi, Galo, Nyishi, and Tangsa tribes. These institutions aim to reinforce traditional learning and value systems through community-led efforts. Additionally, more than 3,000 registered indigenous priests are receiving honorariums in recognition of their crucial roles in performing rituals, preserving oral traditions, and acting as spiritual guides.
To further institutionalize efforts for cultural preservation, tribal cultural centers are being developed in every district. These centers will serve as hubs for documenting, training, and promoting cultural practices. Adding to these initiatives, 50 indigenous prayer centers have been set up statewide, providing dedicated spaces for spiritual practices rooted in native faiths.
Khandu stressed the significance of these endeavors, declaring, “This isn’t just about culture. It’s about who we are. And it’s about making sure we don’t forget.” He underscored that the protection of indigenous faiths is vital for preserving the unique identity and heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
