The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to see significant changes in its candidates for the upcoming 2026 elections, raising concerns about the party’s grip on power. A sense of urgency is evident within the ruling party as discussions intensify regarding potential new faces for various constituencies.
The BJP has already initiated preparations for its election strategy for 2026, following several brainstorming meetings. In each seat currently held by the BJP, the party has conducted two closed surveys. The results of these surveys indicate dissatisfaction with the performance of more than half of the existing lawmakers, with numerous complaints from local constituents against several representatives.
As the party contemplates its options, speculation arises about which candidates will rise to prominence. In the Palashbaria constituency, Hemanth Thakuria, a two-time incumbent, is on the list of potential replacements. Other notable names include Gautam Das and Gurujyoti Das. Following the restructuring of constituencies, Hazow has been reserved for Scheduled Castes, necessitating the departure of current MLA Suman Haripriya. Consequently, the party is actively seeking suitable representatives from the scheduled community.
Reports suggest that transportation minister Gautam Das is also being considered for candidacy, maintaining close communication with party leadership as a representative for the constituency. Meanwhile, political activities have been sparked by Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sharnia and youth leader Pranav Lahkar, both of whom are pushing for a green signal from the party for this constituency.
As candidates vie for nomination, competition is heating up, particularly if the final secret surveys yield similar results in November and December. If that is the case, nearly twenty BJP lawmakers could find themselves in precarious positions come the 2026 elections, as the party wrestles with internal dissent and the call for renewal.
