As layoffs persist in a relatively strong stock market and resilient economy, the direct relationship between job cuts and AI technology remains underexplored. A notable exception is IBM, whose CEO revealed in May that 200 HR positions were replaced by AI chatbots, despite an overall increase in the company’s headcount. Similarly, Klarna has openly addressed AI’s role in its workforce reduction, with CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski stating in May that the company’s team has shrunk from around 5,000 to nearly 3,000 employees.
Experts suggest that IBM and Klarna are not isolated examples. Many companies are refraining from explicitly linking job cuts to AI advancements, opting instead for broader terms like “reorganization” and “efficiency.” Christine Inge, a professional development instructor at Harvard University, noted, “What we’re likely seeing is AI-driven workforce reshaping without public acknowledgment.” Jason Leverant, COO of AtWork Group, agreed, emphasizing that framing layoffs as part of a larger strategy is more palatable than admitting to AI-related efficiency gains.
Candice Scarborough, director of cybersecurity and software engineering at Parsons Corporation, pointed out that recent layoffs often align with the introduction of new AI systems, implying that job losses frequently occur after automation tools are implemented. Experts have observed that companies are reluctant to be transparent, using euphemisms to mask the reality of job displacement caused by software.
The trend is most evident in sectors such as content creation, operations, customer service, and HR, where generative AI is increasingly applicable. While many firms boast robust earnings, they simultaneously enact layoffs under the guise of “efficiency,” even when their financial health remains strong. Inge remarks, “Being explicit about AI displacement invites backlash,” suggesting that vagueness serves as a tactic to maintain employee morale and manage public perception during transitions.
Furthermore, there’s a critical risk management aspect in minimizing AI’s visibility in layoffs. Several organizations have realized that they may have overestimated AI’s capabilities. Taylor Goucher, VP of sales and marketing at Connext Global, stated, “Many layoffs driven by ‘efficiency’ are influenced by AI, particularly in customer service roles.” While companies rush to implement automation, they might still need human employees for oversight and nuanced decision-making.
This complexity obligates many firms to outsource or hire internationally when AI doesn’t deliver as anticipated, resulting in a reduction of U.S.-based jobs. “Companies fear backlash from those skeptical of incomplete AI promises,” Goucher added. Even as firms pursue an AI-centric strategy, they often secretly hire talent abroad to fill gaps left behind.
The current job market, though exhibiting signs of softening, remains strong with a 4.1% unemployment rate as of June 2025. However, predictions are grim: the World Economic Forum estimates that 41% of employers worldwide plan to reduce their workforce within the next five years due to AI automation. Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, even projected that generative AI could eliminate up to half of entry-level office jobs.
While the majority of companies might soon face pressure to be candid about AI’s role, the reality of job losses will likely be glaringly evident by then. Inge concluded, “The only thing we can do as individuals is adapt.” As businesses continue to embrace AI, the conversation around workforce dynamics is more crucial than ever, balancing innovation with the need for transparency in the face of significant change.
