The White House announced Thursday that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a chronic but benign vein condition amidst swirling speculations about bruising on his hand. The diagnosis came following Trump’s medical evaluation for swollen legs, which led to further findings.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt addressed the media, stating, “I know that many in the media have been speculating about bruising on the president’s hand and also swelling in the president’s legs. In the interest of transparency, the president wanted me to share a note from his physician … all results were within normal limits.”
Recent photographs have shown minor bruising on the back of Trump’s hand, which Leavitt attributed to minor soft tissue irritation, likely caused by frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, a standard part of Trump’s cardiovascular prevention regimen. Trump decided to share this health update to inform the public about his condition, which is considered benign and common among individuals over the age of 70.
Leavitt clarified that there is no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease associated with the president’s symptoms. She explained that the bruising is a result of soft tissue irritation rather than any serious underlying condition.
The discussion surrounding Trump’s hand gained significant traction online, particularly after close-up images of the bruising circulated widely. While the theory that frequent handshaking could be the cause was mentioned, many experts dismissed it. Dr. Neal H. Patel, a physician at Providence St. Joseph Hospital, remarked earlier this year that it is unlikely that handshaking caused the bruising. “I see a lot of patients who are businessmen, and I’ve never really seen them getting bruised from too much handshaking,” he noted. “I guess it’s possible, but that would not be high on my list of explanations.”
