US President Donald Trump hinted on Wednesday that a new trade agreement with India could be finalized soon. He also mentioned the possibility of finalizing a trade deal with the European Union, although he said it is too early to determine an agreement with Canada as the tariff deadline approaches.
The Trump administration has been actively negotiating trade deals with various countries to improve trading relations and address the significant US trade deficit ahead of the August 1 deadline, when duties on many US imports are set to increase. So far, the US has successfully completed deals with the UK, Vietnam, and Indonesia and is nearing agreements with smaller countries in Africa and the Caribbean.
In an interview with Real America’s Voice on Wednesday, Trump was asked about upcoming trade deals. He replied, “We’re very close to India, and…we could possibly make a deal with (the) European Union.”
These comments were made as an Indian delegation arrived in Washington on Monday to discuss finalizing trade agreements, while EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic was en route to Washington on Wednesday for tariff discussions.
Regarding the EU trade deal, Trump said, “The European Union has been brutal, and now they’re being very nice. They want to make a deal, and it’ll be a lot different than the deal that we’ve had for years,” as reported by Reuters.
However, when pressed for details about trade agreements with Canada— which is also preparing countermeasures if negotiations with the US do not yield an agreement-Trump stated, “Too soon to say.”
On Tuesday, Trump pointed out that the US is working on a deal that could enhance access to Indian markets while announcing a trade deal with Indonesia that will result in a reduced tariff rate of 19% for Jakarta.
