The central agency, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), has set retail prices for medicines in the market. This agency regularly determines the prices of drugs produced by pharmaceutical companies and has previously authorized price hikes for various medications. Recently, the central government issued a gazette notification confirming this decision, specifying that 71 essential medicines, including those for cancer and diabetes, will have their prices regulated by the NPPA.
Included in this list are medications for metastatic breast cancer and gastric cancer. The drug “Trustuzumab,” manufactured by Reliance Life Sciences, is used for treating these types of cancers, and its retail price is set at ₹11,966 per file, according to the gazette notification. Additionally, this authority has determined that a medication, consisting of a mixture of clarithromycin, esomeprazole, and amoxicillin produced by Torrent Pharmaceuticals, will cost ₹162.50 per tablet and is used for the treatment of peptic ulcers.
The NPPA has also established prices for 25 anti-diabetic drugs and paracetamol produced by various companies. A gazette notice published on July 4 indicated that these medicines’ pricing was determined according to the 2013 price control regulations. Earlier, in April, the authority had increased prices for 748 essential and important medicines. Based on the wholesale price index, the agency approved a 1.74% increase in the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for these drugs.
This list included medicines for common ailments such as paracetamol, cough, snake bites, worms, blood pressure management, sleeping aids, vitamins, constipation, and several important antibiotics, among others. Moreover, last October, due to the rising costs of raw materials, the NPPA authorized a price increase of 50% or more for eight essential medications for conditions such as asthma, glaucoma, thalassemia, tuberculosis, and mental health disorders.
