BJP Protest Halts Former Tripura CM’s Meeting in Chottakhola
A group of BJP supporters staged a protest against former Tripura Chief Minister and senior CPM leader Manik Sarkar during his party meeting in Chottakhola, South Tripura, on Sunday. While addressing the gathering, Sarkar criticized both the central and state governments, accusing them of failing to maintain law and order, fostering corruption, and promoting underdevelopment under the BJP’s rule. In response, BJP activists shouted counter-slogans, highlighting incidents of violence, financial scams, and administrative corruption that occurred during Sarkar’s 20-year governance.
The protest effectively disrupted the meeting, forcing it to be called off halfway, although there were no reports of violent incidents. The CPM emphasized that the location was politically significant as Badal Shil, their candidate in the previous three-tier panchayat elections, was murdered en route to submit his nomination. As the CPM meeting progressed, BJP workers nearby chanted slogans blaming the previous Left government for not protecting citizens from financial scams. They asserted that under the Left’s administration, the chit fund company Rose Valley defrauded thousands in Tripura, with no justice or compensation provided to victims even today.
The ongoing sloganeering and agitation ultimately rendered it impossible for the meeting to continue. Sarkar expressed his anguish over the disruption, describing the BJP’s actions as undemocratic and unethical. He criticized the BJP government in Tripura for occupying properties linked to the Rose Valley case-such as its offices and commercial buildings-for government use, disregarding a court order that mandated selling those properties to compensate victims of the scam.
Sarkar accused the BJP of betraying the people of Tripura continuously. He suggested that their support is diminishing, prompting them to suppress opposition voices forcibly by disrupting meetings. According to Sarkar, such tactics will not sustain the BJP’s hold on power for long in the state.
