Trump Imposes 30% Tariffs on EU and Mexico: What You Need to Know Now
US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that a 30 percent tariff will be imposed on imports from Mexico and the European Union (EU), effective August 1. This decision comes as part of his strategy to renegotiate trade agreements. In a letter shared on Truth Social, Trump stated that the EU must grant the US “complete, open Market Access,” warning that any tariff increases from the EU would be added to the existing 30 percent charge.
The pressure is mounting on the 27-member EU bloc, particularly from Germany, which is calling for a swift resolution to protect its industrial sector. In his correspondence to Mexico, Trump acknowledged that while the country has assisted in border security, it has not done enough. “Mexico still has not stopped the Cartels who are trying to turn all of North America into a Narco-Trafficking Playground. Obviously, I cannot let that happen,” he wrote to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Before departing for flood-affected areas in Texas, Trump advised nations currently negotiating trade deals with the US to “just keep working hard.” He reiterated his long-standing claim that the US has been exploited by both allies and adversaries for years, suggesting that in many cases, the allies have been even more detrimental.
As nations like South Korea and Japan race to finalize agreements with the US, they aim to mitigate the impact of these steep “reciprocal” tariffs. During a press event at the White House, Trump emphasized the need for continued diligence, stating, “I think just keep working hard. You know, we’ve been taken advantage of for many, many years by countries, both friend and foe.”
In a related development, Trump sent a letter to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, announcing that 25 percent tariffs on South Korean goods will begin on August 1, accelerating the timeline from an initial plan that allowed a 90-day pause.
