Urgent: Authorities Set to Demolish Historic Jail Walls in Guwahati

The Kamrup Metropolitan District Road Safety Committee has taken swift action to improve public safety by deciding to demolish the old boundary walls surrounding the former jail campus at Fancy Bazar. This decision comes in light of serious concerns regarding pedestrian safety and was made during a recent meeting led by District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan at the DC office conference hall.

Officials expressed urgent concern over the deteriorating condition of the walls, which they believe could collapse at any moment, endangering pedestrians who use the nearby footpaths. The administration is prioritizing the immediate removal of these structures to mitigate any potential hazards.

In addition, the committee has resolved to designate the areas surrounding Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) as ‘No Parking’ and ‘No Vending’ zones. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow, particularly for emergency vehicles in this heavily trafficked area.

Another significant measure discussed was the removal of unauthorized signboards on road dividers. These signboards are often viewed as safety hazards, obstructing drivers’ visibility and contributing to accidents. The committee has committed to addressing this issue promptly.

To further bolster pedestrian safety, temporary barricades will be set up at select crossings. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and local police.

During the meeting, officials also outlined their commitment to reducing road accidents, injuries, and fatalities in the district compared to the previous year. All departments are being urged to rigorously enforce these new safety measures and fulfill their responsibilities as part of this critical initiative.
