Strategic Alliance: India, Greece, Cyprus, and Armenia Unite Against Regional Threats
India is poised to enhance its diplomatic influence in West Asia through the formation of a new alliance with Armenia, Greece, and Cyprus, aiming to counter Turkey, a close ally of Pakistan. This strategic move follows increased cooperation between Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan against India, particularly evident during the recent “Operation Sindoor,” where Turkey and Azerbaijan provided open support to Pakistan.
In reaction to this growing partnership, India is establishing a coalition reminiscent of a mini “Quad.” The alliance will see India joined by Greece, Cyprus, and Armenia-each having similar concerns regarding Turkey and Azerbaijan. This collaboration not only addresses regional tensions but also aims to bolster security and mutual interests.
India’s relationship with Armenia has recently strengthened, highlighted by a recent incident where Armenia assisted in the rescue of approximately 110 Indian nationals trapped amidst conflicts in the region. This developing bond indicates the potential of the four-nation alliance to exert more pressure on Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.
During a recent visit to West Asia and Eastern Europe, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made significant strides in enhancing ties with Cyprus, notably visiting a spot from which Northern Cyprus, a Turkish-controlled area, is visible. This gesture has been interpreted as a clear diplomatic message to Turkey. Furthermore, India has publicly supported Cyprus’s sovereignty, culminating in a strategic partnership aimed at reinforcing diplomatic and military collaboration. Reports suggest that Cyprus may soon acquire advanced weaponry from India, potentially including the BrahMos missile, which would further solidify their defense alliance.
Similarly, relations between India and Greece have long been amicable, gaining momentum following Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Athens in August 2023. The two nations signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement, underscoring their commitment to deeper military ties. Modi referred to Greece as the “gateway to Europe” for India, emphasizing their shared geopolitical concerns, particularly regarding stability in the region.
The defense relationship between India and Greece continues to flourish, with Indian naval vessels increasingly docking in Greek ports during operations in the Mediterranean Sea. This growing military cooperation enhances the strategic positioning of India in the region and reflects a proactive approach to counter challenges posed by Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.
