
Guwahati’s Review Meeting: Empowering Weaver Welfare through Handloom Initiatives
A review meeting focused on the development of handloom clusters took place at the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles in Guwahati, Assam. The meeting aimed to evaluate the implementation strategies intended for the socio-economic upliftment of local weavers. Ramendra Narayan Kalita, the MLA of West Guwahati and Chairman of AMTRON, chaired the meeting, which saw participation from key officials and stakeholders, including N.N. Rana Patgiri, Retired Additional Director; Bidyut Dutta, Director; and Nishikanta Sharma, Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles.
Representatives from the Borjhar Soru Agchia Buwa Kotha Samabai Samiti Ltd., including the President and Secretary, were also in attendance. The discussions centered around a thorough examination of the cluster’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), covering aspects such as financial coordination and project timelines. Kalita announced that the second installment of funding is anticipated to be released by September 2025, with a target for the completion of key components by December 2025.
Concerns regarding the distribution of looms, accessories, and resources were addressed during the meeting. A collaborative approach was decided upon, involving both the implementing agency and the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles for corrective actions. Officials underscored the handloom sector’s significance in West Guwahati, highlighting its rich cultural heritage and essential role in providing livelihoods through traditional craftsmanship. The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to empower weavers and promote sustainable development within the region’s handloom industry.
