Opposition CPM Urges CM to Address Police Inaction on Tripura Violence
Agartala: The opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has accused the Tripura government of police inaction in response to escalating political violence in the state. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Manik Saha, Jitendra Chaudhury, the CPM state secretary and leader of the opposition, highlighted a series of recent attacks on opposition members and called for urgent measures to restore law and order. Chaudhury criticized the state administration for ignoring a rising tide of politically motivated violence, describing it as a ‘culture of impunity’ that allows aggressors to operate without fear. The allegations challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) widely promoted slogan of ‘Sushashan,’ or good governance, indicating a deterioration in law and order across Tripura.
He raised concerns about attacks specifically targeting opposition leaders, supporters, and party resources. Many of these incidents reportedly occurred in the presence of law enforcement, who chose not to intervene. “The Chief Minister’s recent statement promising a ‘free hand’ to the police raised expectations for fair law enforcement,” Chaudhury stated. “Instead, we are witnessing an unprecedented rise in political hooliganism, with police either remaining silent witnesses or actively supporting the culprits through deliberate inaction.”
The letter documents several instances of political violence occurring between June 17 and June 30, illustrating a pattern of consistent targeting of opposition voices. Notably, on June 17 in Bishalgarh, during a sanctioned CPM meeting, over 20 motorbikes were vandalized, and several activists were allegedly assaulted by members of the BJP’s youth wing, the Yuva Morcha. Despite police presence at the scene, they reportedly failed to take action for over an hour.
On June 21, a public event organized by the Indian National Congress in Udaipur was disrupted, and former minister Sudip Roy Barman was allegedly assaulted in front of a significant police contingent. Just two days later, BJP members vandalized Roy Barman’s official residence in the presence of police, yet no arrests were made. The following day, on June 22, the homes of CPM supporters in Jirania, Narsingarh, and Jogendranagar were ransacked due to their political affiliations, and police reportedly did not act against the attackers, despite being informed.
On June 24, a gathering of CPM members was targeted by masked individuals allegedly linked to the ruling TIPRA Motha party in Takarjala. Once again, police, despite prior deployment, failed to intervene promptly to control the violence. Subsequently, on June 29 and 30, scheduled CPM events in Kakraban and Tulamura faced disruptions or were forcibly abandoned due to violent interference. Chaudhury characterized these events as coordinated attacks executed with the tacit approval or complicity of local police.
