Reviving Bonds: Thackeray Cousins Reunite After Two Decades at Historic Marathi Identity Rally
In a historic political moment, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, long-time rivals and estranged cousins from the original Shiv Sena, will share a public stage for the first time in 20 years. The event, set for July 5 at the NSCI Dome in Worli, coincides with the celebration of “Marathi Vijay Diwas.” This comes on the heels of the Maharashtra government’s controversial decision to withdraw two government resolutions related to the implementation of a three-language policy in schools, a move that had faced significant opposition from both the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
The joint celebration is organized under the banner “Marathicha Awaaz,” featuring the names of Uddhav and Raj Thackeray as co-hosts alongside a graphic representation of Maharashtra, yet notably omitting party symbols. A public invitation released on July 1, 2025, speaks directly to the people: “Marathi mothers, sisters, and brothers, did we make the government bow down? Yes, we did! This celebration belongs to you.” Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut confirmed the event would emphasize “Marathi unity and pride,” reinforcing regional identity amidst the political landscape.
The government’s recent withdrawal of resolutions proposing the introduction of Hindi in state-run schools, announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on June 29, was met with approval from both parties, deeming it a “victory of the Marathi manoos.” Initially, the two factions had planned a protest march, but they scrapped this in light of the government’s decision and opted for a public celebration instead.
In contrast, BJP MP and former Chief Minister Narayan Rane criticized Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of pushing Raj out of the Shiv Sena and now seeking reconciliation for his own political benefit. Rane stated on social media, “Has Mr. Uddhav forgotten how he harassed Raj, causing him to quit the party? Now he is trying to butter him up in the name of brotherhood.” He also attributed the downfall of the original Shiv Sena to Uddhav, saying, “Balasaheb Thackeray brought the party to power, but Mr. Uddhav lost it.”
Rane claimed that key figures like himself, Eknath Shinde, and Ganesh Naik played essential roles in expanding the Shiv Sena under Balasaheb’s leadership, but alleged that Uddhav discarded them. Notably, Raj Thackeray had previously campaigned in support of Rane during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, illustrating the complex relationships within Maharashtra’s political framework.
In a defensive response, Bhaskar Jadhav, a senior leader from Shiv Sena (UBT), questioned Rane’s political credibility and consistency. “Why is Narayan Rane so concerned about others? He left his own party within a year and then quit Congress. He needs to explain his own journey to the people of Maharashtra,” Jadhav remarked. He also referenced Rane’s recent comments about BJP Minister Ravindra Chavan, suggesting they reveal deeper contradictions within the ruling coalition.
As Maharashtra observes this unique collaboration between former rivals, the upcoming event is poised not only to celebrate Marathi pride but also to showcase the shifting political alliances that characterize the state’s landscape. This convergence of the Thackeray cousins is indeed a significant chapter in Maharashtra’s political narrative, signaling potential new dynamics as they seek to unify their base of support.
