Manipur Implements Toughest Aadhaar Rules to Combat Identity Fraud
Manipur has implemented one of the most rigorous Aadhaar issuance processes for adults in India, ensuring enhanced scrutiny and security in accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and UIDAI. This stringent approach was reviewed during a high-level meeting at Raj Bhawan on Tuesday, chaired by the Governor of Manipur. The gathering included the Chief Secretary, senior officials from the Home Department, UIDAI, as well as representatives from the Social Welfare and Education Departments.
In Manipur, every adult Aadhaar application is subject to mandatory approval at the State Headquarters, specifically under the office of the Special Secretary (Home). A UIDAI official remarked that the adult Aadhaar verification process in the state might be the toughest in the country, designed to prevent illegal foreigners from obtaining Aadhaar cards.
To further enhance the Aadhaar framework and ensure accurate data, the state is introducing two required biometric updates: MBU-1 for children aged 5 to 7, and MBU-2 for individuals after turning 15. These updates, which are free of charge, are crucial for maintaining the validity and accuracy of Aadhaar, reducing the risk of misuse and ensuring seamless access to government and financial services.
Officials emphasized that it is essential for both biometric and biographic data to be regularly updated to accurately reflect current identity markers. This proactive measure is expected to significantly strengthen data security and reliability in authentication across Manipur.
The state’s firm stance against identity fraud reflects its commitment to setting a new benchmark in Aadhaar governance, promoting safety and integrity in the system.
