Excitement Peaks as Monsoon Finally Embraces Delhi: IMD Issues Urgent Yellow Alert!

Earlier this month, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted that the monsoon would arrive in Delhi around June 24-25. Today, that prediction has materialized as parts of the national capital experienced light rain, marking the onset of the monsoon season. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi for both Sunday and Monday, predicting daily rain until July 5.

The monsoon’s arrival was slightly delayed due to an anti-cyclonic circulation that impacted its progression. Historically, Delhi typically sees the monsoon begin around June 27. According to the Safdarjung weather station, a key observatory in the region, the rainfall recorded was minimal, with only “trace” amounts measured in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, followed by 5.1 mm in the period from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In terms of air quality, the Central Pollution Control Board reported that Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 85 at 9 a.m., classifying it in the ‘satisfactory’ range. AQI scores between 0 and 50 are categorized as ‘good,’ while scores between 51 and 100 fall under ‘satisfactory.’

The rain, while welcomed by many, resulted in waterlogging in certain areas, including around the Lodhi Crematorium and parts of Seelampur. The Delhi government’s helpline for waterlogging incidents received at least six calls by 8 p.m., indicating that the precipitation had begun to affect daily life for some residents.

As the city prepares for more rainy days ahead, residents are urged to stay cautious, particularly concerning their travel routes and outdoor plans. The IMD’s predictions highlight the significance of the monsoon season in Delhi, which plays a crucial role in replenishing water sources and impacting agricultural activities.

With this arrival of the monsoon, the capital city can anticipate a decrease in dust and pollution levels, making for a more refreshing environment as temperatures start to cool. As rain continues into the week, Delhi residents can look forward to the relief that the monsoon brings, despite the challenges it may also present.

Stay informed as developments unfold throughout the rainy season. Delhi’s monsoon is set to invigorate the city, and all eyes are on the skies as the rains continue their welcome return.
