Supporting Hindi as a Mandatory Third Language: An Essential Debate
Recently, the All India Shivsena and BJP proposed making Hindi a mandatory third language in schools starting from the first grade. Raees Sheikh, a senior leader and MLA of the Samajwadi Party from Bhiwandi, expressed deep concerns over this proposal, labeling it as a significant part of a national agenda to recognize Hindi as the “primary language.”
Currently, students in Maharashtra are required to study Marathi and English from the first grade. Many have raised objections to the suggestion of making Hindi compulsory as a third language. According to MLA Sheikh, if the government decides to introduce Hindi into the curriculum, it should start from the fifth grade.
Furthermore, he mentioned that numerous opposition parties share similar concerns regarding this decision, and he expressed his support for this collective stance. Sheikh also announced that he would participate in a gathering organized in support of the Marathi language, scheduled for July 5 in Mumbai, where he will discuss the matter with senior leaders of the Samajwadi Party.
