In a striking evolution of his stance, financial advisor Ric Edelman now advocates for significantly greater cryptocurrency allocations in investment portfolios. While just four years ago he recommended a meager 1% allocation, he recently suggested that financial advisors should consider advising clients to allocate between 10% and 40% of their investments to cryptocurrencies. “Today I am saying 40%, that’s astonishing,” Edelman remarked during an interview with CNBC’s Crypto World, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of this recommendation.
Edelman attributes this substantial shift in perspective to what he describes as “the evolution of crypto in the past four years.” Initially, uncertainty surrounded the future of cryptocurrencies-questions loomed about potential government bans, the technology’s relevance, and its acceptance by consumers and institutions. Today, however, Edelman asserts that these uncertainties have been resolved, proclaiming crypto as a mainstream asset. He leads the Digital Assets Council of Financial Advisors, which further underscores his authority in this space.
As cryptocurrencies gain traction, they will increasingly be integrated into investment strategies. With Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) attracting billions in 2023, it’s evident that more financial advisors and long-term investors are recognizing the value of cryptocurrencies. Edelman also highlights another transformative shift: the decline of the traditional 60/40 investment model-60% in stocks and 40% in bonds-which he deems outdated. Increased life expectancy, from around 47 years in the 1900s to a current average of 85, necessitates a reevaluation of how portfolios are structured for long-term growth.
“If you’re a financial advisor and you had a 30-year-old client saving for their future, you would advise them to invest 100% in stocks because they have decades ahead,” Edelman asserted, suggesting that today’s 60-year-olds must adopt similar strategies to match the longevity of their investments. “You need better returns than what bonds offer, and equities must be held longer than ever,” he added. As traditional allocations shift away from bonds, Edelman believes that cryptocurrencies must play an increasingly crucial role.
Edelman points out that Bitcoin shows price movements largely independent of stocks, bonds, gold, and other commodities. This characteristic presents a unique opportunity to enhance portfolio performance, making crypto a “wonderful way to improve modern portfolio theory statistics.” He warns, however, that the potential for higher returns in cryptocurrency is not without caution; some analysts predict Bitcoin could reach prices between $150,000-$250,000 by year-end and hit $500,000 by the end of the decade.
In other related news, the first half of the year saw a surge in crypto hacks, with over $2.1 billion stolen across at least 75 incidents, according to TRM Labs. These incidents predominantly targeted crypto infrastructures, with more than 80% of thefts involving private keys and seed phrases. Meanwhile, discussions are underway regarding a plan from Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to have Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac include cryptocurrency as a federal mortgage asset.
