Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar affirmed the Andhra Pradesh government’s commitment to journalist welfare during the 36th State Maha Sabha of the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) in Ongole on Wednesday. The event highlighted the government’s intention to follow through on promises made in the coalition’s joint manifesto, emphasizing the crucial role that journalists play in societal development.

Addressing the audience, Minister Kumar praised journalists for their dedicated service, often amid demanding and hazardous situations like natural disasters and national crises, stating their work is often done without expectation of personal gain. He raised concerns that the welfare initiatives for journalists have stalled under the current YSR Congress Party-led government, following a period of support from the previous Telugu Desam Party (TDP) administration.

Kumar announced plans to reinstate an insurance program for journalists that previously existed during the TDP’s time in office. He highlighted that he has already facilitated housing plots for some journalists and is actively working on securing additional plots for others. In a move to enhance recognition and accessibility for media professionals, Kumar also mentioned ongoing efforts to issue new accreditation cards to all working journalists in the state, having engaged in discussions with the relevant minister to expedite the process.

Social Welfare Minister Dr. Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy reinforced the coalition government’s commitment to advocating for journalists’ rights and benefits. He noted that a committee of ministers has been established to address the accreditation card issue, promising that this initiative will proceed promptly.

The gathering also featured notable attendees, including Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu, several local MLAs, and numerous leaders from journalist unions, marking a significant turnout that underscored the collective importance of supporting the media community.

The remarks and announcements made during the event reflect a renewed focus on journalist welfare, a critical aspect of maintaining a free and robust press in Andhra Pradesh. As the government seeks to revive support systems for journalists, these initiatives are positioned as vital steps toward ensuring that media professionals receive the recognition and resources they need to perform their essential roles effectively.

This commitment to journalist welfare stands as a pivotal point in the ongoing relationship between the government and media professionals in the state, highlighting the need for collaboration in promoting transparency and upholding democratic values.
