England finished Day 2 of the first Test against India at Headingley on 209 for 3, trailing by 262 runs after India’s first innings total of 471. On a day marked by rain, determination, and fast bowling, Ollie Pope’s resilient century led England’s fightback, though Jasprit Bumrah dealt a significant blow by dismissing Joe Root just before stumps.

The day’s play began with clouds looming over Leeds, resulting in a 40-minute delay due to rain. Once play commenced, Bumrah quickly made his mark by removing Zak Crawley, caught in the slip cordon, giving India an early breakthrough. Despite this setback, England’s Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope responded with a vital 122-run partnership, showcasing their intent to battle back. Duckett, known for his aggressive style, looked to seize control but had his luck when he was dropped by Bumrah. Pope likewise had a near miss when Yashasvi Jaiswal let a catch slip while he was on 60.

Bumrah returned to break the partnership by dismissing Duckett for 62. Throughout this, Pope remained solid, displaying remarkable maturity and skill as he gathered runs under pressure, eventually reaching his fourth Test century. Just as celebrations began for Pope, Bumrah struck again. His very next delivery after Pope’s milestone saw Joe Root edged out to slip, a crushing moment for England as Root’s steady presence was vital for their recovery.

As the sun set over Headingley, Harry Brook received a reprieve when he was ruled not out after being caught off a Bumrah no-ball, a moment that momentarily had Indian players celebrating. Brook and Pope managed to navigate the remaining overs without further loss, bringing England’s score to a respectable position at stumps.

Earlier in the day, India had a promising start, resuming at 373 for 3. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant provided the innings with much-needed momentum, both scoring centuries. However, a dramatic collapse saw India lose their last seven wickets for just 41 runs, much to the dismay of their fans. England’s bowlers, particularly Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue, capitalized on this, with both taking four wickets to breathe life back into the match.
