Over 200 Sanitation Workers Expose Corruption: Urgent Appeal to CM

In Sivasagar on June 22, over 200 safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) staged a protest, alleging corruption involving vehicles and resources intended for their welfare. The demonstration commenced with a rally at Shivadoul, where participants held banners and portraits of notable figures such as Babasaheb Ambedkar and Lachit Borphukan, before gathering in a local hall to discuss the challenges they face.

During the meeting, the workers raised concerns about their salaries and the misappropriation of funds meant for their benefit. Representatives from various workers’ organizations, including the Harijan Mazoor Union, attended the event, with participants traveling from districts like Bongaigaon, Mariani, Tinsukia, Nazira, and Simaluguri. Resolutions addressing these grievances were reportedly adopted during the gathering.

The protestors expressed a desire to meet with the Chief Minister to discuss their issues directly and requested an appointment. One participant highlighted a lack of awareness among the public regarding the corruption affecting safai karamcharis, citing evidence of serious financial irregularities in Sivasagar. Another protestor claimed that some council members intentionally downplay the workers’ problems, suggesting that they only manage public perceptions by portraying a facade of harmony.

“There are deeper issues we wish to address with the Chief Minister, but we fear sharing them with the press,” a protestor admitted. The protestors were critical of the government’s focus on political opposition instead of the welfare of its citizens. They posed rhetorical questions, questioning the priorities of the ruling party and whether the BJP is working in the interest of the workers.

The protestors threatened to escalate their actions if their grievances are not addressed within two months, hinting at a larger demonstration and a hunger strike as potential next steps should the government fail to respond.
