Experience Tranquility: Celebrate International Yoga Day in Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi!
Celebrating the theme "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," International Yoga Day was marked with enthusiasm across Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi districts on Saturday. The day featured various events aimed at promoting wellness through yoga, emphasizing the importance of this ancient practice in modern life.
In Kanniyakumari, T. Mano Thangaraj, the Minister for Dairy Development, participated in a yoga session organized by the District’s Yoga and Naturopathy Department, part of the Department of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy. Minister Thangaraj joined over 300 participants, including students and local residents, in demonstrating yoga’s unifying power.
Meanwhile, Thoothukudi witnessed a significant turnout at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH), where around 200 attendees, including doctors and medical students, celebrated the day. The event featured G. Sivakumar, the Dean of TKGMCH, as the chief guest, alongside prominent medical figures such as R. Padmanabhan, the Medical Superintendent, and V. Kalaivani, Vice Principal. Their participation underscored the collective commitment to integrating yoga into health and wellness practices.
Similarly, the TNFJU Fisheries College and Research Institute organized its own celebration, where Dean B. Ahilan highlighted the historical significance of yoga in India. He encouraged staff and students to engage regularly in yoga practices to enhance their health. This event attracted over 250 attendees who participated in a common yoga protocol session.
At the V.O. Chidambaranar Port, the 11th International Yoga Day was celebrated in the port’s community hall, where professional instructors from "Art of Living" led participants in yoga exercises. Susantha Kumar Purohit, IRSEE and Chairperson of the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, emphasized yoga’s vital role in achieving personal well-being and collective harmony. He advocated for the daily practice of yoga, recommending at least one hour each day, and announced that the port would host yoga sessions three times a week for its employees, supported by the port’s sports council.
The events across both districts showcased not only the physical benefits of yoga but also its capacity to foster community spirit and resilience. As people embraced yoga on this significant day, the call for regular practice was echoed, reminding everyone that a commitment to wellness can impact both personal health and community cohesion.
With strong participation in these celebrations, the message was clear: whether through group sessions in schools, healthcare institutions, or local communities, the practice of yoga continues to provide a path for holistic health and unity. The widespread support from local leadership and institutions affirms the ongoing relevance of yoga in contemporary life and the commitment to fostering a healthier, more integrated approach to wellness for all.
