Over 100 Indian students safely boarded a flight to return from Iran as part of Operation Sindhu, which was initiated amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel. On Thursday, the first evacuation flight landed in New Delhi from Yerevan, Armenia, carrying 110 Indian nationals.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the students, primarily from Tehran, were evacuated through coordinated efforts with the Indian Embassy. “Indian students in Tehran have been moved out of the city for safety reasons through arrangements made by the Indian Embassy,” the ministry stated. The students took off from Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan at 14:55 IST on June 18 and were expected to arrive in New Delhi in the early hours of June 19.

Randhir Jaiswal, MEA spokesperson, announced on Twitter, “Operation Sindhu begins. India launched Operation Sindhu to evacuate Indian nationals from Iran. We evacuated 110 students from northern Iran who crossed into Armenia under the supervision of our Missions in Iran and Armenia on June 17. They departed from Yerevan on a special flight and will arrive in New Delhi early on June 19, 2025. India places the highest priority on the safety and security of its nationals abroad.”

The Indian government expressed gratitude to both the Iranian and Armenian authorities for their support during this critical evacuation process. The MEA has been actively assisting numerous Indian nationals in relocating from conflict zones to safer areas within Iran, ensuring their subsequent evacuation through available options.

In its official communication, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Indian citizens abroad. Those remaining in Iran were urged to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the MEA’s 24-hour Control Room in New Delhi. The MEA provided several emergency contact numbers, including those for the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the MEA’s Control Room, ensuring that citizens have access to assistance whenever needed.

As the situation evolves, additional phases of Operation Sindhu are anticipated, demonstrating India’s proactive stance on ensuring the safety of its citizens in emergency situations. This evacuation marks a pivotal move in response to the escalating military conflict, underscoring the government’s dedication to its citizens abroad.

With the ongoing tensions in the region, the operation highlights the importance of coordination with local authorities and timely responses to protect Indian nationals. The government has reiterated its priority on ensuring safety and security, providing a lifeline to those caught in the conflict. Travelers and students in similar situations are encouraged to stay informed and connected, as the MEA continues to monitor the situation closely.
