India is considering a potential reduction in its exports of refined petroleum products amidst escalating tensions in the Israel-Iran conflict, which could disrupt maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made this announcement on Thursday, June 19, 2025, as reported by Bloomberg. He emphasized that India is actively preparing to import crude oil from sources beyond the Persian Gulf.
“We have enough stocks of crude and refined products,” Minister Puri stated during an interview with NDTV. He reassured stakeholders that India’s diversified crude supplies would mitigate risks posed by any regional disruptions, adding, “Even if there were to be a disruption, we can source it from alternate suppliers.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical conduit for global trade, accounting for nearly a quarter of the world’s oil. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has raised concerns about the security of this vital passage. Although reports suggest that Iran has previously threatened to close the Strait during conflicts, concrete actions have yet to materialize.
Highlighting India’s oil consumption, Puri noted, “India consumes 5.5 million barrels of oil every day, with 1.5 million barrels imported via maritime routes.” He expressed confidence in the market’s current supply levels, indicating that there is no immediate cause for alarm regarding potential disruptions to oil imports.
As India contemplates curtailing its refined petroleum exports, global markets could be significantly impacted. Major Indian refiners, including Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy, supply refined products to countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, the United States, and Australia. In 2025, India exports approximately 1.3 million barrels per day, with major oil marketing companies like Reliance and Nayara accounting for 82% of these exports, according to data from Kpler.
The possibility of reducing exports could create ripple effects across international markets, particularly for nations reliant on Indian refined petroleum. As the scenario evolves, market stakeholders are urged to monitor developments closely, particularly in light of the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz.
