Empowering Change: S.K. Bhasha Takes Charge as AP Chairman of Port Trust Workers Federation
Shaik Khalifatulla Bhasha, based in Ongole, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Unit of the All India Port Trust Workers Federation (AIPTWF). This pivotal appointment underscores a commitment to empowering port trust workers and enhancing the labor movement within the state. The announcement was made by Arnab Chatterjee, the National Chairman of AIPTWF, during the ‘Viksit Bharat – 11 Years of Governance for the Common People’ event held in New Delhi on Tuesday, signaling a new chapter for labor representation in Andhra Pradesh.
Bhasha is not only stepping into this crucial role but also serves as the President of the AP Bhartiya Janta Majdoor Cell (BJMC), further demonstrating his dedication to worker advocacy. His dual leadership positions are expected to foster collaboration and drive initiatives that will benefit workers across the port sector.
During the event, Chatterjee highlighted the importance of having a dedicated office space for the AIPTWF’s Andhra Pradesh unit at the Visakhapatnam Port. In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, he emphasized that establishing an office on port premises would facilitate better communication and coordination between port workers and authorities. “The presence of our office within the port premises will greatly enhance coordination between port workers and authorities, and ensure timely redressal of grievances and implementation of welfare initiatives,” Chatterjee stated.
This initiative received further support during discussions with prominent government officials. Chatterjee spoke with Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, and Shantanu Thakur, the Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, both of whom expressed their commitment to assisting the federation in its outreach and activities. Their backing is expected to strengthen the federation’s efforts in advocating for worker rights and improving conditions within the maritime industry.
Bhasha’s appointment and the subsequent establishment of an AIPTWF office aim to create a more organized and responsive structure for addressing the needs and concerns of port workers in Andhra Pradesh. The initiative aligns with broader governmental goals of labor empowerment and social welfare, enhancing support systems available to those working in this vital sector.
As port operations continue to play a crucial role in the economic landscape of Andhra Pradesh and India as a whole, the establishment of strong leadership and effective communication channels within the AIPTWF is more important than ever. With Bhasha at the helm and robust support from national leaders, workers can expect a renewed focus on their rights and welfare initiatives designed to improve their working environment and quality of life.
This significant development comes at a time when labor organizations are increasingly becoming central to discussions about equitable growth and worker representation in India. Bhasha’s leadership promises to bring meaningful changes to the port trust workers’ community, setting a precedent for similar movements across the country.
As the AIPTWF navigates this new chapter, its impact on the port sector and labor movement in Andhra Pradesh will be closely watched by stakeholders both locally and nationally.
