Himanta Biswa Sarma Unveils New Centralized Mid-Day Meal Kitchen in Dibrugarh
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone for a modern centralized community kitchen in Dibrugarh, marking a significant initiative to revamp the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme in government schools. This event took place on Sunday, June 15, and represents a crucial step toward providing hygienic and nutritious meals to schoolchildren across the state.
The new facility aims to deliver meals at a subsidized cost of ₹12.50 per student, with the capacity to prepare and distribute over one lakh meals daily. This initiative is designed to standardize meal quality and enhance the nutritional intake of students in the region.
To ensure the meals arrive at schools fresh and warm, specially designed vehicles with hot chambers will be employed for transportation. The Assam government is backing this project with an investment of ₹25 crore, showcasing its commitment to improving the welfare of students.
The Dibrugarh kitchen is the first of several that are planned for Assam, with additional kitchens set to be established in Majuli, Nalbari, Lakhimpur, and Tezpur in subsequent phases. State officials have assured that the new centralized system will not impact the employment of current MDM cooks. Instead, the initiative aims to improve efficiency while continuing to support existing staff involved in meal preparation and distribution.
This project aligns with the government’s broader vision of enhancing school infrastructure and promoting public health through improved nutrition and logistical innovation.
