In a groundbreaking initiative, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) announced overseas exposure tours for both the senior men’s and women’s cricket teams, inspired by former secretary Devajit Saikia, who is now the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). These tours, scheduled for June and July, mark a significant milestone for Assam cricket, providing players with vital international experience. Ranji Trophy captain Denish Das will lead the 15-member men’s team to Namibia from June 18 to July 1, engaging in their first competitive matches against a national squad. Former Assam cricketer Subhrajit Saikia will serve as the team’s coach during this tour.
Meanwhile, the women’s team, captained by India international Uma Chetry, will embark on their inaugural overseas tour to Malaysia from July 5 to 16. The 14-member lineup will be supported by deputy Rashmi Dey and coached by Rajib Rajbangshi. Both teams will participate in five one-day matches against their respective national teams: the men facing Namibia in Windhoek and the women competing against Malaysia.
These tours aim to enhance the players’ skills by exposing them to different playing conditions, allowing them to grow and improve in their cricketing abilities. At the event announcing the tours, Saikia emphasized the importance of international exposure in shaping their careers, stating, “Competing against strong international sides will challenge their skills and broaden their cricketing horizon. I’m confident this initiative by ACA will pave the way for future excellence.”
ACA secretary Tridib Konwar expressed hopes that the players would return with experiences that elevate the standard of cricket in Assam, highlighting the aspirations they carry for their state. The selected squads reflect a mix of established and emerging talent, with the men’s team including Denish Das (Captain), Sumit Ghadigaonkar (Vice-Captain), and others, while the women’s team features Uma Chetry (Captain) and Rashmi Dey (Vice-Captain), among others. This historic venture underscores the ACA’s commitment to nurturing cricket talent in Assam on the international stage.
