Five Accused to Face Justice: Interrogations Lead to Sohra Transfer

SHILLONG, June 13: The East Khasi Hills Police plan to take all five individuals accused in the honeymoon murder case to Sohra for a crime scene reconstruction after completing their questioning. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed on Friday that the interrogation of Sonam Raghuvanshi and the four other accused is currently ongoing. “Once the questioning is concluded, we will proceed with the reconstruction of the crime scene,” he stated to reporters.

The five accused have been remanded in police custody for eight days following their court appearance on Wednesday. Syiem mentioned, “Should the investigation necessitate an extension of police remand, we will seek that from the court.” He also noted that the primary accused, Raj Kushwaha, along with co-accused Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi, had never previously visited Sohra.

The Special Investigation Team, which solved the case within a remarkable seven days, is working diligently to build a strong case against the suspects for allegedly murdering Raja Raghuvanshi, a tourist from Indore, in Sohra on May 23.

In a separate development, the state government has decided against pursuing legal action against major media outlets and individuals for inflammatory remarks regarding Meghalaya, its citizens, and its police force that arose in the wake of the Sohra incident. Cabinet Minister and MDA spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh indicated that the media’s response to the government’s call for public apologies was swift and satisfactory. He stated that many prominent media houses, including the Times of India and Republic TV, as well as several private bloggers, have provided their unconditional apologies.

When asked if the government would maintain its legal courses, Lyngdoh remarked, “For example, the family of the deceased has also publicly apologized to the government and the people of Meghalaya. Thus, the matter is closed.”
