A significant gas blowout at ONGC’s Rudrasagar oil field is now in its third day, continuing to pose challenges at Well No. RDS-147 (Rig SKP-135) in Bhatia Para, Sivasagar. The leak originated during routine servicing operations around 11:45 AM on June 12 and remains uncontrolled.
Despite the deployment of ONGC’s crisis management teams and emergency protocols, efforts to contain the leak have seen little progress. Authorities have confirmed that there are no reports of fire or casualties; however, the ongoing hissing noise and strong odor of petroleum continue to disturb nearby communities.
In response to the emergency, over 1,200 residents-approximately 137 households-have been evacuated from within a 1 km radius of the site and relocated to a relief camp in Bongaon/Bhatia Para. While support services such as cooked meals, drinking water, medical care, and security are being provided, evacuees have expressed concerns regarding inadequate basic amenities.
Sivasagar district administrator Ayush Garg has stated that technical teams from ONGC, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local emergency services are actively working together to secure the well and restore normalcy. He urged residents to avoid the affected area and adhere to official instructions.
ONGC has reported that a “well-killing” operation involving specialized fluids is currently underway, with further efforts anticipated at dawn. However, the company has not offered a specific timeline for when the situation may be contained or additional actions may be taken.
Local residents are growing increasingly frustrated as they remember the devastating 2020 Baghjan disaster. There are concerns about delays in restoring living conditions in the relief camp. District officials have provided a three-day window for conditions to improve, cautioning that they will implement further measures if no progress is achieved.
