Shock Waves: Airlines Cancel and Divert Flights Amidst Rising Tensions After Israel-Iran Attacks
Airlines across the globe are suspending flights to Israel and avoiding a significant portion of Middle Eastern airspace following Israel’s missile strikes on Iran. This escalation in military tension prompted immediate safety concerns, leading major carriers to alter their flight plans drastically.
Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have cancelled all service to Tel Aviv, halting flights at least until Saturday. Their aircraft, which were bound for Israel, were turned around mid-air over the Atlantic and returned to the New York area in response to the unfolding situation. Meanwhile, Israeli airline El Al announced it has indefinitely suspended all flights. In a statement on its website, the carrier noted, “Following recent security developments and in accordance with the instructions from the state’s security and aviation authorities to close Israeli airspace, all EL AL and Sundor flights are suspended for the time being.” El Al further advised travelers to refrain from heading to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv and suggested that passengers currently overseas arrange for accommodation until security conditions improve.
This decision follows Israel’s closure of its airspace and the suspension of operations at Ben Gurion International Airport on June 13, 2025. Alongside El Al, Turkish Airlines and the European budget carrier Wizz Air have also announced suspensions of flights to the region. Germany’s Lufthansa has expressed its intention to suspend services to both Tel Aviv and Tehran until July 31, along with flights to Jordan and Lebanon until at least June 20.
In light of these disruptions, airlines are proactively providing travel vouchers and waiving change fees for affected passengers. The ongoing military conflicts in the Middle East, compounded by the tensions in Ukraine, are compelling airlines to navigate longer and more costly routes to avoid potential conflict zones.
Travelers should remain vigilant and informed about ongoing developments. The rapidly shifting security landscape has encouraged airlines to adapt their operations to ensure passenger safety, shedding light on the intricacies of international travel during turbulent times. As airlines reevaluate route viability in response to geopolitical tensions, affected travelers are urged to stay connected with their airlines for updates and to monitor the situation closely.
