Chatong Villagers Forge Wooden Bridge to Overcome Isolation Challenges

In a commendable display of community spirit, the villagers of Chatong, a remote village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district, have constructed a wooden bridge to alleviate ongoing communication issues caused by inadequate infrastructure. Faced with limited resources and frustrated by government inaction, over a hundred villagers came together, each contributing financially to the project. Women actively participated as well, supporting men with food and beverages during the construction.

A local resident expressed, “We contributed from our own pockets to build the bridge because the government failed to address our needs. This bridge will finally help us overcome the communication bottleneck that has long been neglected.”

Despite recent developmental initiatives in Arunachal Pradesh, many areas, including Chatong and nearby villages like Ozakho, Langmai, and Chajam, continue to suffer from a lack of proper roadways and bridges. Although two roads connect the villages, the primary route, a PMGSY road through Chibam block, is unfit for use, forcing villagers to take a much longer 40-kilometer detour via the neighboring Tirap district to reach their district headquarters in Longding.

Years of neglect by various governments have pushed the villagers to take matters into their own hands. Jacob Wangsu, President of the Chatong Students Union, noted, “We completed the bridge in about three days and expect it to significantly ease our problems. When the government didn’t act, we decided to take action ourselves.”

As the local community forges ahead, Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu represents the Kanubari legislative assembly constituency, which encompasses around 500 households across these four villages. The villagers’ efforts underscore a broader call for better infrastructure and development, highlighting the enduring resilience and unity among the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
