Embrace the Spirit of Poson Poya: Celebrating 2,000 Years of Buddhism in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is celebrating the sacred Poson Poya festival today, which marks the historic arrival of Buddhism over 2,000 years ago. This festival, observed during the June full moon, commemorates the first sermon delivered by Arahat Mahinda, the son of Emperor Ashoka, to King Devanampiyatissa at Mihintale. This profound event signifies the introduction of Buddhism to the island nation.
Thousands of devotees have flocked to Mihintale Hill and other sacred locations, including Anuradhapura, to partake in the festivities. Streets, homes, and public spaces across the country are beautifully adorned with paper lanterns and decorations, reflecting the celebratory spirit of the occasion. In his message to the nation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the importance of unity and moral revival as essential pathways to national transformation.
Additionally, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka is celebrating the occasion with an exhibition showcasing Indian Buddhist heritage at the National Museum in Colombo. To support the influx of pilgrims, free train services are being provided between Anuradhapura and Mihintale throughout the Poson week, alongside special train services connecting Colombo Fort and Anuradhapura. These arrangements aim to facilitate easier access to the significant sites of this revered festival, strengthening the communal bonds that Poson Poya fosters within Sri Lankan society.
