On June 6, 2025, a 14-year-old girl disclosed to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Soreng District that she had been sexually assaulted by her uncle, Santosh Chettri alias Nanda Ram, 26, from Bara Samdong. She revealed that the most recent assault occurred at the Tiger Statue in R*, and similar incidents had been happening since she was 12 years old. The girl stated that the accused would summon her to various locations each month to subject her to penetrative sexual assault. Following a written FIR filed at Nayabazar Police Station, a case has been registered under sections 4 and 8 of the POCSO Act, 2012. Santosh Chettri has been arrested and is currently in police custody as the investigation proceeds.
In another incident reported on June 7, 2025, a resident from G** in Soreng District informed police that his 17-and-a-half-year-old daughter was approximately six months pregnant. During questioning, the minor revealed that she had been sexually assaulted by Basant Biswakarma, 28, of Garbeytar Goke, West Bengal, while she worked at a restaurant in Jorethang from September to November 2024. The girl indicated that she had been both physically and sexually assaulted by the accused, with whom she had been cohabiting. Following her complaint, Jorethang Police registered FIR No. 16/2025 under various sections of the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Basant Biswakarma has been arrested and remains in police custody, while the victim has been medically examined and returned to her legal guardian.
A third case surfaced also on June 7, 2025, when the CWC in Soreng District reported that a minor girl had been sexually assaulted on June 3, 2025, by a man she referred to as her brother. The accused, MD. Aris, 20, originally from Madhepura, Bihar, and currently residing in Kaluk Bazar, allegedly took the victim to his rented room and committed penetrative sexual assault. The minor initially hesitated to report the incident due to fear and misplaced trust in the accused. Upon receiving the FIR, police registered Case No. 03/2025 under sections 3 and 4(2) of the POCSO Act, 2012. MD. Aris has been arrested and is in police custody as the investigation is ongoing.
