Tragic Loss: Seven-Month-Old Elephant Calf Falls into Well in Chhaygaon
A seven-month-old wild elephant calf tragically died after accidentally falling into an abandoned well in Ouguri village, located within the Bamunigaon Forest Range in Chaygaon, on Monday morning, June 9. Range Officer Aminul Islam confirmed that local residents alerted the department early that day. Upon arrival, forest officials found the lifeless calf inside the uncovered well.
Initial investigations indicate that the calf belonged to a herd of wild elephants that had wandered into the area. It appears the calf fell into the well inadvertently during their movement. A veterinary team was dispatched to the site for assessment, and a post-mortem examination was conducted on location.
Ranger Aminul Islam noted that the veterinary officer found no external injuries on the calf’s body, which rules out any indications of foul play, reinforcing that the incident was purely accidental. This unfortunate event highlights the ongoing challenges wildlife faces due to human encroachment and the need for effective measures to protect these animals in their natural habitat.
