Critical Phone Talks: Xi and Trump Aim to Resolve Tariff Crisis
Chinese President Xi Jinping and former US President Donald Trump engaged in a phone conversation yesterday to address their ongoing disputes over reciprocal tariffs. The leaders agreed to facilitate further discussions between their trade representatives to help untangle the current trade standoff. During the call, Xi urged Trump to approach the sensitive Taiwan issue with caution, emphasizing the importance of maintaining diplomatic stability.
After the conversation, Trump took to Truth Social to express his satisfaction, describing the call as very productive and noting that they discussed various details surrounding their recently established trade agreement.
In the exchange, Xi pointed out that the United States should realistically assess the progress made and consider withdrawing some of the negative actions it has imposed on China.
Both leaders also concurred that their teams should proceed with the implementation of the Geneva agreement and aim to schedule another round of meetings promptly. Following previous discussions in Geneva last month, the US and China had tentatively agreed to lower their retaliatory tariffs, highlighting a willingness to ease trade tensions.
