In a controversial move, a religious event took place on Thursday and Friday at the district health office in Vishwanathapuram, Madurai, despite laws prohibiting such activities in government facilities. Sources indicate that an invitation was distributed by the District Health Services office, inviting staff and others to a consecration ceremony and homam for a newly constructed temple-like structure. The event was scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on June 5 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 6.
Social activist Anand Raj criticized the decision, emphasizing that the health office serves individuals from diverse religious backgrounds seeking medical assistance. He highlighted that both the Tamil Nadu government guidelines and orders from the Madras High Court clearly restrict the holding of religious events at government offices, which should be neutral spaces accessible to all.
Raj referred to Government Order No. 426 issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department on December 13, 1993. This order expressly prohibits the construction of new religious structures within government premises, as well as any modifications to existing ones for religious purposes. It underscores the importance of secularism in government environments, stating, “It restricted the practice of worship of different faiths in office premises by government staff.”
The order further directs all Heads of Departments to ensure compliance and to instruct subordinate offices under their control to adhere to these mandates strictly. Raj noted with concern that both the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the Deputy Director of Health Services in Madurai participated in the event, despite their responsibility to prevent such occurrences.
“As the State government upholds the principle of secularism, events of this nature in government buildings should be curtailed, with accountability measures in place for those who violate these orders,” Raj asserted.
A health official, wishing to remain anonymous, confirmed that invitations for the event were circulated among doctors and staff via WhatsApp groups. In response to the situation, Madurai District Collector M.S. Sangeetha stated she had not been informed about such an event but expressed her commitment to investigate and take necessary action.
This incident raises significant concerns regarding compliance with established government protocols and the appropriate use of public office areas.
