Assam Flood Crisis Escalates: Death Toll Reaches 46 Amidst Urgent Appeals

The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday, despite a reduction in rainfall, with two additional deaths reported, raising the overall toll across seven northeastern states, excluding Sikkim, to 46. As of now, Assam has recorded 19 fatalities since the onset of floods and heavy rains on May 29, followed by 12 in Arunachal Pradesh, six in Meghalaya, five in Mizoram, two in Tripura, and one each in Nagaland and Manipur.

According to officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 679,000 individuals have been affected across 21 districts due to the floods. More than 14,977 hectares of agricultural land have sustained damage in 1,494 villages. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are currently flowing above danger levels at various points in the state.

Arunachal Pradesh is also grappling with severe flooding, with continued rainfall leading to fresh landslides that have submerged areas across 23 districts, affecting more than 3,000 people. Although no new deaths were reported on Tuesday or Wednesday, the state has recorded at least 12 fatalities since last week due to monsoon-triggered landslides and floods in districts such as East Kameng and Lower Subansiri. Reports indicate significant disruption in transport, particularly along the Likabali-Aalo highway.

The Changlang district is the most severely impacted in Arunachal Pradesh, with six villages inundated, leaving 2,231 residents homeless. The floods have also damaged 212 homes and caused the deaths of 425 livestock, including poultry and other animals.

In Manipur, the Assam Rifles have stepped up their humanitarian efforts in the wake of substantial flooding, especially in the Imphal Valley. A recent operation involved distributing 350 liters of drinking water and 5,000 liters of water for general use to residents affected by the deluge. This intervention was met with gratitude from the local population struggling with access to clean water.

Simultaneously, relief efforts in Khumidok village have included rescues, medical aid camps, and operations aimed at removing stagnant water to alleviate health risks. The community has recognized the critical role of the Assam Rifles in saving lives amid this crisis.

While conditions in Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland have improved, Assam continues to feel the brunt of the floods, with the death toll from this year’s incidents reaching 19. The latest ASDMA bulletin confirms that nearly 680,000 people remain affected, and nine major rivers are flowing beyond their danger marks.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rainfall in isolated areas, raising concerns for further flooding. Thunderstorms with gusty winds are also predicted for districts such as Dhubri and Goalpara.

The number of individuals affected surged overnight from 650,000 to 679,423, impacting 66 revenue circles and 1,494 villages. The worst-hit district is Sribhumi, affecting over 259,000 people, followed by Hailakandi and Nagaon.

As of now, more than 41,000 people have sought refuge in 190 relief camps, with additional relief distribution centers operational statewide. Agricultural activities have been severely disrupted, with nearly 15,000 hectares of cropland submerged. Extensive damage to infrastructure, including roads and schools, has also been reported.

Urban flooding continues to pose challenges in two districts, impacting over 1,000 residents, and train services in southern Assam are disrupted due to rising water levels. Road and ferry connectivity remain compromised as the state faces ongoing flood challenges.
