Liu is alleged to have initially denied, but later acknowledged, his involvement in smuggling Fusarium graminearum through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport to conduct research at the University of Michigan.

Both Jian and Liu have been charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy, smuggling goods into the country, making false statements, and visa fraud. Patel emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that it serves as a “sobering reminder” of the CCP’s ongoing efforts to infiltrate American institutions and target the U.S. food supply. He remarked, “This would have grave consequences, putting American lives and our economy at serious risk.” The FBI remains vigilant in its mission to combat threats to national security, asserting that “justice will be done” in this case.
