At least 34 people have lost their lives due to severe floods and landslides in the Northeastern states of India, including Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, in the past three days. Rescue operations are currently being conducted by the Air Force and Assam Rifles, according to reports from NDTV.

Over 1,200 tourists have been stranded in northern Sikkim, and planned evacuations were halted due to a new landslide. In addition, eight tourists remain missing after their vehicle was swept away into the Teesta River.

Flash floods and landslides have affected 10 districts in Meghalaya, with more than 10,000 residents impacted in Tripura. In Assam alone, approximately 360,000 individuals across 764 villages in 19 districts have faced significant disruptions due to the floods. On Sunday, two additional deaths were reported, raising the total related to floods and landslides to 10. Rivers are experiencing dangerously high levels, particularly the Brahmaputra, which has surpassed safe limits in areas like Dibrugarh and Neematighat, while five other rivers are also above danger levels. More than 10,000 individuals have relocated to relief camps for safety.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the Governor of Manipur, offering comprehensive assistance to manage the crisis. He stated on social media platform X, “Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and the Governor of Manipur in light of the ongoing heavy rainfall. I assured them of all possible help to address the situation. The Modi government stands unwaveringly with the people of the Northeast.”

To further support those affected, the Assam government has announced a compensation package of ₹400,000 (approximately $4,800) for the families of the victims, as confirmed by Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah.
