Strategic Dialogue: PM Modi and President Peña Palacios Meet in New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold discussions with President Santiago Peña Palacios of Paraguay in New Delhi today. The two leaders are expected to examine the full spectrum of bilateral relations. During his visit, President Peña will also engage with President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This marks President Peña’s first visit to India and only the second visit by a Paraguayan president in history. He is in India for a three-day state visit, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes ministers, senior officials, and business representatives.
Following his engagements in New Delhi, President Peña will travel to Mumbai before returning to Paraguay on Wednesday. In Mumbai, he plans to meet with state political leaders, as well as representatives from the business and technology sectors.
India and Paraguay established diplomatic ties in 1961, nurturing warm and amicable relations over the decades. The two nations have collaborated in multiple domains, including trade, agriculture, health, pharmaceuticals, and information technology. Paraguay has emerged as a significant trading partner for India in the Latin American region, with several Indian companies operating in the automobile and pharmaceutical sectors within Paraguayan territory. Conversely, Paraguayan businesses are also active in India, further strengthening the economic bonds between the two countries. Both nations align on various international issues, including reforms at the United Nations, climate change, renewable energy, and the fight against terrorism.
