Residents of New Dashmesh Nagar in Ward 24 Frustrated by Civic Negligence: A Call for Urgent Change!

Residents of New Dashmesh Nagar in Ward Number 24 are increasingly frustrated by ongoing civic issues, including clogged sewers and deteriorating manhole lids. With the monsoon season approaching, neglected rainwater drainage systems pose significant risks to public health and safety. Despite numerous complaints submitted to the Amritsar Municipal Corporation (MC), residents report that no substantial action has been taken, exacerbating their concerns.

The locality has been plagued by recurring sewer blockages, primarily attributed to the accumulation of silt and waste. Pawan Kumar, a local resident who has been vocal about these issues for weeks, expressed his exasperation. “The condition is worsening day by day. I personally filed complaints with MC staff, but they keep passing the buck. No one is ready to take responsibility,” he stated, highlighting the lack of accountability from municipal officials.

Gurpreet Singh, another affected resident, emphasized the danger posed by the area’s many broken and missing manhole covers. “These damaged manholes are death traps. Anyone can fall into them, especially during waterlogging in the rainy season. It’s shocking how the authorities are turning a blind eye to such a serious issue,” he said. His words resonate with concerns over public safety, particularly for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.

Further exacerbating the problem, many inner streets in New Dashmesh Nagar remain waterlogged for days following even minor rainfall. This not only causes significant inconvenience for residents but also creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes, heightening the risk of vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. With the onset of the monsoon season, residents fear that the situation will worsen if urgent measures are not addressed. “Last year, many streets were completely submerged, and dirty sewer water accumulated in the streets for weeks. We cannot go through that again,” warned Narinder Kumar, reflecting the anxiety many feel as rain approaches.

The community demands immediate action, including the de-silting of sewer lines, repair and replacement of manhole covers, and regular maintenance of drainage systems. They argue that without swift intervention, they are likely to face repeated disasters akin to last year’s flooding.

As public pressure mounts, it remains to be seen how the Amritsar Municipal Corporation will respond to these escalating concerns. Residents are increasingly vocal about the need for leadership and accountability, hoping that their pleas will be heard before the first rains hit. The future of New Dashmesh Nagar’s infrastructure and public health hangs in the balance, calling for immediate attention and action from local authorities.

With monsoon season fast approaching, residents find themselves at a crossroads, advocating for their right to a safe and functional environment. Their resolve underscores a larger narrative about civic responsibility and the urgent need for effective governance in urban areas.
