The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have ramped up their rescue operations in Manipur, successfully evacuating more than 500 civilians from heavily flooded areas in Imphal East and West. The worst-hit regions include Wangkhei, Heingang, Lamlong, Khurai, JNIMS, and Ahallup. To enhance these efforts, ten flood relief columns equipped with BAUTs and inflatable boats have been deployed. Emergency repairs are also underway on a breached boundary wall of the Iril River near Arapti Lamkhai in Lilong to avert additional flooding. Army boats have been utilized to transport stranded patients from JNIMS Hospital to safer locations.
Collaborating closely with local authorities, the Indian Army aims to provide timely support to affected communities. Nearly 800 bottles of drinking water have been distributed to displaced families, highlighting the critical nature of the relief operation as Imphal East remains the region most severely impacted by the floods. Various localities, including Khurai, Heingang, and Checkon, have been significantly affected by the overflowing Imphal River, which has also compromised essential infrastructure.
The flooding and landslides across Manipur have caused extensive displacement and damage, affecting approximately 19,811 people and damaging about 3,365 homes. Floodwaters have compromised crucial facilities, such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), necessitating the relocation of patients. Local volunteers, along with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are working tirelessly to assist hospital authorities and the families impacted.
In light of the crisis, Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has urged Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to declare the floods a “state calamity,” which could activate further institutional responses. Additionally, schools in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Senapati sub-division have extended summer vacations due to the ongoing emergency. Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh criticized the Water Resources Department for insufficient pre-monsoon preparations.
Governor Bhalla, accompanied by Chief Secretary PK Singh, has visited submerged areas such as Kangla Nongpok Thong, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Singjamei Bridge. An official release from the Raj Bhavan indicated that “Instructions have been issued to monitor river levels and carry out timely evacuations.” While the situation in Khurai and Heingang remains worrisome, waters have begun to recede in Checkon and Wangkhei.
Authorities are on high alert as weather forecasts predict additional rainfall. Efforts for relief and rehabilitation are advancing rapidly to support displaced families and limit further damage, with collaborative actions being taken to closely monitor the ongoing situation and ensure effective responses to any developments.
